The U.K. has experienced a scorcher these past three weeks, making some of the main events of the summer truly unforgettable. Ascot, Henley Royal Regatta, and Wimbledon have been graced with blue skies and bright sunshine, however, this is not always good news. Whilst queuing for one of the Regatta enclosures I saw women everywhere frantically fanning themselves whilst peering into their phone screens to check their mascara hadn’t run or their foundation hadn’t turned into a melted mess. So here are my top five products that ensure you wont experience a makeup meltdown this summer.
1. PREP: L’Oreal Hydra Genius moisturiser £9.99 Buy here
Before even thinking about applying foundation it is key that your skin is not only hydrated but also primed to guarantee a flawless makeup application. During the warmer months I tend to use a moisturiser that includes Glycerin to avoid layering both a moisturiser and a primer on top of one another. Glycerin is an ingredient found in most primers that causes makeup to stick to the skin. One of my favourite glycerin based moisturisers is the L’Oreal Hydra Genius Aloe Water. This product has a light texture, leaving the skin hydrated but not greasy, creating a perfect base for foundation.
Note: In my experience, these moisturisers tend not to include any SPF. On days I know I’ll be outside in the sun I apply a glycerin moisturiser with my favourite SPF. This still creates a great base for makeup whilst ensuring the skin is protected from any harmful UV rays!
2. PRIME: Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water £22.00 Buy here
For additional makeup staying power I love using primer water. Again, this minimises the number of heavy products that are layered under your makeup. I know this sounds like you are paying £20 for some tap water in a bottle but Smashbox’soriginal primer water refreshes and preps the skin ready for makeup. This additional step creates a fresh and hydrated complexion, allowing any foundation to be effortlessly blended into the skin.
Note: If you are on tighter budget Smashbox’s Photo Finish Primer Wateris sometimes available from Bicester Village’s The Cosmetics Company Outletfor around £14!
3. SET: RCMA No-Colour Powder £13 Buy here
Setting powder can often cling to dry patches creating a rough, uneven finish to the skin. This can ruin the perfectly blended, flawless complexion you’ve created. However, RCMA’s No-Colour Powderis so finely milled that it perfectly sets your foundation, keeping your oils at bay without settling into any fine lines. The “no-colour” or invisibility aspect of the powder means that it won’t alter the shade of your foundation base and B. Prevents any nasty flash-back in photos, ensuring you are always camera ready.
Note: RCMA’s No-Colour Powder, unfortunately, comes in very bulky packaging, making it very messy to apply, especially when on the go. If you use powder to touch up throughout the day it might be worth decanting the product into a more traditional loose powder container. If not, see product no. 5 for perfect on-the-go touch-ups!
4. SET & REFRESH: Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray £24 Buy here
If you are going to invest in any of these products the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Sprayhas got to be the one. This iconic spray not only sets your makeup in place all night long (as the name would suggest), but also removes any powdery residue creating a more skin-like finish to your foundation. This vital step in your makeup routine helps control oil and stops makeup settling into fine lines throughout hot and humid conditions…meaning less time spent worrying about makeup touch-ups and more time enjoying those balmy evenings.
Note: Urban Decayalso have travel sized versions of all their setting sprays so you can easily refresh your makeup throughout the day!
5. MAINTAIN: Too Cool For School Dinoplatz Blotting Paper £6.50 Buy here
My no1 handbag essential, especially if you have oily/ combination skin! Blotting paper has been used for years throughout the cosmetics industry, as they are easy and convenient for removing any excess oil that is produced during the day. Blotting away any oil and then touching up with powder (if needed) is an important step to avoid catastrophic cake face at any event. In my experience, you cant go wrong with any brand of blotting paper you buy but these cute Dinoplatz ones from Too Cool For School feature a handy mirror and a nifty adhesive powder puff, ensuring ease of application and flawless makeup all night long!
Note: Too Cool For School’s website only ships to the USA and Canada but their products can also be found on Beauty Bay, Cult Beauty, Ebay, and Amazon.
All of these products have been essential for me when wanting to maintain a fresh makeup look all day long. Please comment down below any of your must-have beauty items that you rely on, especially during these warmer months!
